Great discovery!

New Media. New Discovery...

I'm presently taking a Printing course and while testing my new Drypoint Etching tool on Acetate, I discovered that I can draw and keep the transparency of the acetate.  I used printing ink with a flat brush to fill in the groves and the results are amazing.  I love this.  I can't wait to try this technique with other types of paint and support.

Of course, to continue in the progress of discovery, I continued with my plan and I moved my subject to Watercolor.  Again, the "What if" presented itself and I ended up with two images.  The one on the left is the traditional Watercolor presentation and the one on the right is the What if.  I prefer the floating Apple.  The colors are much more vibrant even if I did use the exact same palette.

Finaly, I leave you today with these freehand ink drawings.
  • Question:  If the Artist says it's an apple, does that trick your mind into seeing the apple?  Do you look for the apple within?  Do titles realy matter?

"What if ..."

As I began to draw my Apple - (Photo A) in Charcoal, Conte and Graphite to warm up I noticed that I after drawing in a classical way I began to ask myself how "I", me, Lynn would interpret the image and use my own stroke.  What if I let my hand feel the "Apple".  What if I let my eye roam around the object.  Studying the contour, tone, color and hue,... etc...  Here is what I came up with:

The images on the left are classical applications.  To the right I asked - What if.

N.B.:  as a consequence of this first study, my first final piece for Apple A is a composition of Ink and montage:

"The Apples are chosen!"

Welcome Back,

The Apples have been Chosen!

Following my previous post of October 6, 2012 - I now present to you the photos of the apples I will be drawing, painting, sculpting, and analysing...

Chosen Apples - Final Oct 11, 2012

I chose these images for the following reasons:

A.  I picked the apples myself and wanted a personal connections to the subject I would be studying.

B.  I wanted 5 different compositions:
  1. A single Apple (The perfect apple).
  2. 2 Apples (a couple)
  3. 2 Apples - one whole and one cut
  4. A small grouping
  5. A Large grouping (Nature morte composition)
Please comment on the photos and I am open to any suggestions:

In the upcoming week, I will eandeavour drawing Apple 1. with graphite, charcoal /conte / chalk-pastels, coloring pencils, ink and marker.  The idea is to study the first image deeply to understand the structure of the object and it's the potential representation.

I will also post all photos and notes on the website  http://www.conceptslcg.com/myappleproject

The "Apple".

As a child, we all remember being so proud when our first drawn fruit, the apple, was recognised by others.  A simple circle (2D) and a line (1d) and an apple was created.  How magical.  And then there was no stopping us. The sun rose high with shooting rays...  We all lived in a square cabin with a single door and window, with Mom and Dad who were giants with oversized brains...  And then something happened.  We could not see behind the apple. (3D)...  How could we represent on a sheet of paper (2D) something that had mass and weight...  We stopped imagining, We stopped the magic...

In this blog, I will endeavor to recapture some of that magic by blocking off 4 hours a week and study the subject of the apples by representing it in drawing, paintings, scultures and any mediums.

My goal, with your help, is to be able to define my Artist Statement and personalise my Artistic Approach.

I hope you will follow along and help me recover the magic and rediscover the "Apple". This is My Apple Project.  Welcome.
